Pioneering the Future of Sustainable Logistics: XeroE and Varamis Rail Lead the Way

On 13th January 2025, XeroE, in partnership with Varamis Rail, unveiled the UK’s first intermodal emission-free delivery trial. This landmark initiative is set to revolutionise the logistics industry by integrating containerised cargo bikes, electric vehicles, and electric rail freight into a seamless, sustainable distribution chain.

Addressing the Middle Mile Challenge

The “middle mile” – the critical link between production hubs and urban centres – has long posed challenges for logistics providers striving for both cost efficiency and sustainability. This innovative trial tackles the problem head-on by deploying pre-sorted pre-packed cargo bike containers transported via electric vans and rail freight, with cargo bike deliveries for the final mile.

The trial’s route, running from Birmingham International Train Station to Glasgow, exemplifies this model:

  • Electric Vans: Transport cargo bike containers to and from Birmingham and Glasgow rail hubs.
  • Electric Rail Freight: Ensures efficient, low-carbon transit between the two cities using green energy only.
  • Cargo Bikes: Deliver the goods to consumers in Glasgow without emissions.

This collaboration delivers a fully integrated, zero-emission logistics solution that demonstrates scalability and cost-effectiveness.

Redefining Sustainability Standards

XeroE and Varamis Rail are setting new benchmarks for sustainable logistics. By validating the economic and environmental viability of intermodal, emission-free delivery, this project offers a transformative alternative to diesel-reliant systems. The anticipated benefits include:

  • Reduced Emissions: Cutting carbon and particulate pollution across all stages of delivery.
  • Lower Urban Congestion: Leveraging electric rail and bikes to ease road traffic.
  • Cost Efficiency: Enabling sustainable deliveries to made at no extra cost throughout the distribution chain from origin to customer.

XeroE’s unparalleled leadership in emission-free logistics, coupled with Varamis Rail’s expertise in rail freight, underpins this trial project. Together, they are refining intermodal logistics, creating adaptable solutions for urban and regional networks, and paving the way for industry-wide change.

The trial was part of one of the Freight Innovation Cluster's activities and has been sponsored by the Department For Transport.

Driving Impact and Innovation

Steve Evans, XeroE founder, emphasised the significance of the partnership: “This collaboration is a testament to the power of innovation in addressing the logistics industry's most pressing challenges. We are excited to work with Varamis Rail to prove that a cleaner, greener supply chain is not only possible but economically viable.”

The trial aligns with XeroE’s mission to clean up urban air and contribute to the UK’s sustainability goals. Having already completed over 1.2 million emission-free deliveries, XeroE continues to lead the way in sustainable logistics, now extending its expertise to middle-mile transportation.
